Virginia Oaks, 97, of Gulliver (formerly of Lupton)

Virginia R. Oaks, age 97, passed away Friday afternoon July 15, 2022, at her home in Gulliver, MI with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Virginia was born on Wednesday, April 8, 1925, to Stacy and Olive (Short) Barber. She had lived in Gulliver for the past 9 years, previously of Lupton, MI. and Swartz Creek, MI.  

Virginia was a teacher at Eisenhower Elementary – Flint Community Schools for over 25 years, while her late husband, Ray, worked for General Motors in Flint. Together they kept very busy and enjoyed gardening, traveling together. They spent many winters in Zephyrhills, FL, and enjoyed a wonderful Christmas trip to Hawaii. They also both enjoyed their many trips “Up North”. They truly loved the Mackinac Bridge and traveling the Upper Peninsula. 

Virginia is survived by her daughter Rose (Stephen) Paden of Gulliver, MI, sister Velma Bell of Holly, MI and many nieces and nephews. 

She is preceded by her parents, husband Ray E. Oaks Sr., Son Ray E. (Carol) Oaks Jr. also her infant grandson Todd Oaks in a tragic car accident in 1969, and brothers Melvin Barber and Myron Barber. 

Visitation for Virginia will be held from 4-8pm Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in Rose City, MI. Her funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the funeral home with visitation starting at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in South Branch next to her husband. Pastor Jay Clough of the Mio Seventh-day Adventist Church will officiate. 

Memorial Contributions can be given to the Manistique Seventh-day Adventist Church 809 Duck Inn Rd, Manistique, MI 49854.
