Richard Watz, 90, of Standish

Richard John Watz, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, at the age of 90 in Standish, MI. Born on May 24, 1933, in Saginaw, MI, to John Watz and Regina Wisniewski, Richard grew up in the South End of Bay City with a proud Polish heritage. He began his working life setting pins at a bowling alley before branching out to Keit’s Green House, and later honorably serving his country in the United States Army.

After marrying the love of his life, Donna Lucille Sharrow, on August 15, 1962, Richard devoted himself to building a nurturing home in Standish, Michigan, where together they raised four children. He eventually retired as a Millwright from Conagra at the age of 55, which allowed him to spend more time pursuing his vast array of interests and caring for his family.

Richard’s life was a testament to his love for the outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he cherished moments spent at “The Beach,” his cottage on Whites Beach. He found joy riding motorcycles and was devoted to his faith as an active member of Resurrection of The Lord Catholic Church. Another enjoyment of his was tending to his garden, instructing his children in the ways of farm life, and spending quality time with his beloved horse, Sakeem. A dedicated tinkerer, there was always a project to be found in Richard’s workshop.

Described by those who knew him as loving, kind, friendly and his congenial nature often made him the life of the party. His legacy as a “ladies’ man” was said with fondness and humor, underlining his charisma and the gentle warmth of his company.

He is survived by his daughters, Julie Marie, Diana (Timothy) Hagley, and Gina (George) Castle; his son, Joe Watz; brothers Donald Watz, and Jack (Jacqueline) Watz; his adored grandchildren, Allison (Roger) Locksheir, Reggie Curtis, Courtney (Richie) Rolfe, Jacob Hagley, Gylian, Georgie Castle, Trisha Watz, Lindsey (Donald) Watz, and Joe Paul Watz; along with his cherished great-grandchildren Jenny, Lucas, and Sophie Stokoszynski, Jude Locksheir, Delia, Charlotte, and Edward Rolfe.

Richard is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna Lucille (Sharrow) Watz; his parents, John Watz and Regina Wisniewski; his sister, Irene (Jim) Suchodolski; his daughter-in-law, Winnie Watz; and his sister-in-law, Elaine Watz.

As we bid farewell to a man of such exuberant spirit and loving heart, we find comfort in the memories we hold, the wisdom he imparted, and the countless lives he touched. Richard John Watz lived fully, loved generously, and left a legacy of kindness that will forever be remembered.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Resurrection of The Lord Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Ronald Wagner presiding.
