Oscoda County Council on Aging Senior News

MIO –  I have learned a lot from 2018. I have learned even when you think you are doomed in reality, you are not. When you think you have hit rock bottom, you either dig deeper or you start climbing out, that is up to YOU. I have learned money doesn’t grow on trees I looked… HARD. I learned life goes on, no matter who dies, who becomes president, who said what or what goes wrong life just simply goes on.   As Mark would say, “the sun will always come up tomorrow”.

It was a rough year and I imagine many people agree with me. But I now know I have the power to change how 2019 is. A new year is not just a whole new year it is a chance to start fresh, learn from your mistakes and make changes.  If you want to make it good, go out and MAKE IT GOOD. I am going to make it good.

Here’s what’s going on to start off the New Year: January 1 Happy new year. 2019 is THE year. I can feel it. Start off by staying safe. Write a list of what you wish to achieve this year. The list can be long or just a single word. Now you have 365 days to make that list happen. Go for it.

The center will open again Wednesday January 2. I invite you to join me at the Friends of the Literacy in Oscoda County meeting January 9 at 5:15 p.m. at the Mio branch of the Oscoda County Library. This is a very small, but very determined group of three people trying to help people read in Oscoda County. We will help anyone young or old read. Young people are easy to help It’s the older adults that we are really trying to help.  It is a very hard thing to admit when you can’t read, so asking for help can be hard. I ask you to join us and help our county residents, we are in desperate need of help. For more information call me at the Center 989-826-3025 or call the library at 989-826-3613 and ask for Amy.

Monday January 14 is the monthly Board meeting at the Oscoda County Council on Aging Center at 9:00 a.m. Please join us if you have an interest, questions or concerns. Monday January 21 is Martin Luther King Day. Let us remember this remarkable man and all he has done to bring us together. The Center will be open that day. Tuesday January 22 from 10:00-11:00 is the monthly senior Cheese box.  If you have not signed up for this distribution you can do so that day.  Thursday January 24 from 1:00-4:00 at the fairgrounds the Together We Can Food Pantry will hand out food.

Again, I wish all of you the best year ever but wishes will not make this happen. I am not a wizard (yet). Get out there and make it great not just for you, but for your friends and family too.

See you in February.

Merianne Tappan is the Director/Medicare Counselor of the Oscoda County Council on Aging. To contact her please call 989-826-3025.
