FAIRVIEW – Fairview Food Market was one of just 13 meat processors who earned state awards at the Michigan Meat Association (MMA) Cured Meat Competition held in Lansing.
Processors receiving grand champion, reserve grand champion, and champion awards included: Barrett’s Smokehouse in Portage, MI; Bellingar Packing in Ashley, MI; Bernthal Packing in Frankenmuth, MI; Fairview Food Market in Fairview, MI; Jerome Country Market in Jerome, MI; Merindorf Meats in Mason, MI; RRR Meat Processing in Buckley, MI; Sanders Meats in Custer, MI; Scott Meats in Muskegon Heights, MI; and Zick’s Specialty Meats in Berrien Springs, MI.
Ninety-eight products into the competition this year. The thirteen classes processors could enter included: bacon, cured specialty meat products, frankfurters, bone-in ham, boneless ham, whole muscle jerky, meat snack stick, ring bologna, specialty products – sectioned and formed jerky, specialty game meats, summer sausage, smoked fish, and smoked turkey.
Entries were judged by Michigan State University faculty and students and MMA members based on aroma, flavor, eye appeal, shape and texture.
Fairview Food Market earned reserve grand champion awards for their smoked turkey and shoulder bacon.
