Girls make history in wrestling

ROSCOMMON– History was made in February as girls took center stage at the first-ever North East Michigan Wrestling Association (NEMWA) State Girls Tournament, competing alongside 250 other young athletes in Michigan.
NEMWA has been rapidly expanding opportunities for female wrestlers, with tournaments and all-girls divisions for ages 5 to 14 statewide. Events like the Girls States are not just competitions, they are milestones, celebrating the growth and recognition of girls’ wrestling in Michigan.
Among the standout performers was Stella Lamon (7), who finished the season with an impressive 31-6 overall record: undefeated 25-0 in NEMWA girls’ competitions, 4-5 in NEWA open boys’ matches, and 2-1 in MyWay girls’ tournaments. Her remarkable performance highlighted both skill and versatility, proving that female wrestlers are making their mark across every division.
For these young athletes, it’s about more than wins and losses; it’s about breaking barriers, building confidence, and showing that the wrestling mat is a place where girls can shine just as brightly as anyone else.
