George Smith Jr., 98, of Rose City

George Smith Jr., age 98, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at MyMichigan Medical Center in West Branch, MI. He was born on Saturday, February 7, 1925, in Downey, CA, to George and Grace (Shunk) Smith. He lived in Rose City, MI for all of his life.

George attended Rose City School until his senior year where he graduated from West Branch High School in 1943. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1945.

After his military service, George embarked on a successful career as a forest technician with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). He dedicated 39 years of his life to this profession, retiring in 1990.

In his free time, George enjoyed gardening, fishing, carpentry, and visiting with his friends. He found solace and fulfillment in these hobbies, which brought him closer to nature and allowed him to express his creativity.

George was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Rose City, where he worshipped. He found comfort and strength in his faith.

George is survived by his loving daughter, Susan Smith of Grand Rapids, MI, and his son, Jay (Toni) Smith of Lewiston, MI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bettye in 2008, his son Gregory Smith, and his brother Curtis (Velma) Smith.

A visitation will be held at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in Rose City on Monday, November 27, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Helen Alford will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Lane Heights Cemetery in Lupton, MI with military honors.
