John ‘Jack’ Almli, 81, of Sterling

Sterling MI- Jack C. Almli, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was blessed to be able to say his goodbyes and reminisce with his loving wife, 5 daughters, sons-in-law and each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was born January 17th, 1942, in L’Anse Twp, Baraga County. The son of John P. Almli and Ada V. Almli (Rock). Jack graduated from Baraga High School in 1961 where he played basketball, football and ran track. He married his high school sweetheart in 1964 and they shared 59 wonderful years together.

Jack served with the 107th Engineering Battalion of Baraga MI for 6 yrs and after moving his family to Bay City MI, he rejoined the 207th Engineering Battalion and retired as First Sergeant, with a total of 20 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion, Right to Life of Michigan and previous member of the Michigan Emergency Volunteers. He retired from the State of Michigan, Dept of Military Affairs.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Shelvy, brother, Pat, brother, Demerse, and Great-Grandbaby, Emily Rose.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Marie C. (Rosich) Almli, are his daughters, Noreen (Mike) Plachta of Omer, Nancy (Mark) Lentz of Standish, Shelby (Jim) Cousins of Sterling, Carol (Tony) Schiavo of Omer, Julie (Keith) Dewald of AuGres; Grandchildren, Scott Izzo, Kellie (Mark) Stawowy , Matthew (Shawna) Izzo, Andrew Izzo, Jake Plachta, Trevor Plachta, Wyatt Plachta, John (Ashley) Lentz, Noelle (Jarrett) Page, Michael Lentz, Jennifer (Steve) Sipos, Ben (Kathleen) Lentz, Jessica (Joshua) Golimbieski, Sarah (Jordan) Klump, Jimmy Cousins, Maria Schiavo, Nick Schiavo, Sam Schiavo, Cole Dewald; Great-Grandchildren, Maddox Stawowy, Evey Lentz, Audrey Sipos, James Lentz, Joseph Golimbieski, Michael Golimbieski, Julia Golimbieski, Marian Golimbieski, Olivia Klump, Christopher Klump; and siblings, sister, Corrine (John) McGinty, brother, Jerry (Jennifer) Almli, and brother, Dennis (Brenda) Almli.

Jack’s life revolved around his family, never missing an activity or an event. He was known everywhere he went as a great storyteller and a “jack of all trades”. He was always up for a game of cards, corn hole, horseshoes, or frisbee and he loved to hunt and fish. He treasured his time in the Upper Peninsula, visiting family and friends as well as his adventures to Isle Royale with his brother and cousin. His children and grandchildren have many fond memories of spending time with him at his camp in the U.P. and those memories will last a lifetime.

Jack was always there with a listening ear and great advice. His family and friends knew him to be hardworking, fun-loving, good natured, and dependable. The impact of his great love of family and country will be carried on for generations to come. He will always be loved, forever missed and never forgotten.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, at 3:00pm at Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home-Standish Chapel with Father Ron Wagner presiding. Family and friends will be greeted at 12:00 noon until time of service at 3:00pm. A Military tribute will follow at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Cemetery in Standish. Dinner to follow.
