Dr. Rod Wright, 67, of Tawas City

Dr. Rod Russell Wright, a loving husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in Tawas City, Michigan, on May 20, 2023. Born in Flint, Michigan, on March 12, 1956, he was 67 years old. In his youth, Rod was a remarkable roller skater. He competed in both figure and dance skating, and in the 1970s, he represented the United States at a national level. This early accomplishment was a testament to his tenacity and dedication, qualities that he exemplified throughout his life.

Rod earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan and a Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine. In 1984, he started his own practice, The Tawas Foot Clinic where he was more than a doctor to his patients for over 30 years. Rod was a compassionate friend and a steadfast pillar in the community.

Rod was a man of diverse interests, a reflection of his love for nature and the community. He found immense joy in waterskiing and boating with his family. Rod took great satisfaction in tending to his land; he was often found outdoors, expertly maneuvering his tractor and lawnmower to maintain his property, raking the beach sand, or overseeing various house projects. Alongside his wife, Sharon Wright, Rod enjoyed traveling and attending dog shows, showcasing their beloved Bouviers.

Rod actively supported his community and the Iosco County Animal Shelter. His respect for service animals led him to contribute to the Detroit Mounted Police Department, where he once donated horses to their draft mounted unit. This act of generosity underscores Rod’s commitment to both animals and his community.

Rod is survived by his wife of 22 years, Sharon Wright; his children, Ryan, Remington, and Raymond Wright; stepchildren, Kelley and Kevin Kosmider; and his sister, Cynthia Dawn Wright. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and William Wright, and his brother, William “Skip” Wright.

Rod’s celebration of life will be held at Shoreline Park in Tawas City on June 24, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to remember Rod in your own unique way, to reflect on the lessons he shared, and to celebrate his life as he lived it: with kindness, resilience, and open-heartedness.”
