Glenn Scharer, 77, of Hale

Glenn T. Scharer, age 77 of Hale, passed away peacefully at home with family and friends by his side on April 30, 2024. Glenn was born in 1946 in Pasadena. California to Merlin Emmanuel and Hope Carol (Scofield) Scharer. He attended and graduated from North Royalton High School in 1964 where he was inducted into the National Honor Society and served as the president during his junior and senior years. Upon graduation from Ohio Northern University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree, he joined the United States Navy in service to his country during the Viet Nam war. As a pilot, logistics and legal officer at NAF Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii, he never officially served in combat but contributed to the readiness training and preparation for those who did. He was honorably discharged from active duty in March 1972. Glenn resigned his commission as a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve in 1975.

After his active-duty service in the Navy, Glenn embarked on a career of some 33 years in the domestic and international engineering and construction industry, which took him to different locations around the United States and globe. During the last 2 years of his career, he worked as an independent consultant/contractor, in Perth, Australia, retiring in 2007. During his retirement, he lived a quiet life renovating his home, gardening, and occasionally fishing. He did fulfill the one outstanding item on his bucket list – to return and see some of the “touristy” attractions he missed traveling from one job location to the next during his domestic career.

Glenn is survived by his sister Janet and his niece, Barbara, both of Richmond, Virginia. Glenn was preceded in death by his brother, Craig Alan, and his parents, Merlin Emmanuel, and Hope Carol (Scofield) Scharer.

In accordance with his wishes, Glenn has been cremated. Family will welcome friends for a time of visitation on Friday, May 17th, 2024 from 10:00 -11:00 am at Hale Methodist Church.  A memorial service will begin at 11:00 and will close with Military Honors.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, Ohio Northern University, or a not-for-profit organization of your choice.
