David Leonard Grimm

Wagner and Walsh Funeral Directors

David Leonard Grimm, age 78, of Roscommon, died on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, in Grayling, Michigan.

David was born September 12, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Edward and Catherine (Foster) Grimm.

David grew up in Detroit and is a graduate of the class of 1960 at Cass Technical High School. He went on to study at the Society of Arts and Crafts (for many years the Center for Creative Studies, now the College for Creative Studies) where he received training as an illustrator. Beginning in 1962, after his studies at SAC, he worked as an illustrator for Creative Industries in Detroit, where he worked on creating drawings for factory production manuals used by Chevrolet.

In 1970, Grimm took a position with General Motors at the Technical Center in Warren, also as an illustrator. Eventually, he was trained on the Unigraphics computer design system and worked as a designer for the three years before his retirement in 2000.

He was an enthusiastic builder, whether it was the retirement home he built at Higgins Lake in 1975 (along with all the interior furnishings) or the numerous model boats and trains that he built from his memory of an earlier time. He also enjoyed boating, hiking trails with his beagles and spending time with all his good friends at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Roscommon, which he had been a long-time member. He will be remembered for his independent spirit, his love of the outdoors and his passion for all things historical.

David will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his sons: Donald Grimm from Utica, Michigan, Darren Grimm from Ira, Michigan and David C. (Julie) Grimm from Capac, Michigan; grandchildren: Kyle, Lucas and Huyana; great granddaughter Kensley.

David is preceded in death by his parents.

Family and friends will gather from 11:00 AM until the time of the Memorial Service at 12:30 PM, Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Wagner and Walsh Funeral Directors, 143 Lake Street, Roscommon, Michigan 48653.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made in David’s name to Good Shepherd United Methodist Church of the North.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wagner and Walsh Funeral Directors, Roscommon.
