LANSING – Justice can be slow, but it is coming for Brynn Bills and Abby Hill.
Today, Joshua Wirgau, 35, of Alpena, pled guilty to one count each of Disinterment and Mutilation of a Dead Body, Felony Accessory After the Fact, and Involuntary Manslaughter in the 26th Circuit Court in Alpena before Judge Ed Black
Alpena County Prosecutor Cynthia Muszynski and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced in a release today that Wirgau’s plea accompanies a sentencing agreement requesting 15-30 years’ incarceration, and an agreement to cooperate with the prosecution in the case of the double homicide of Bills, formerly of Mio and Hill.
Wirgau stood accused of assisting in the burial of Bills on his own property in August 2021, and of murdering Hill in September of that same year, to prevent Hill from revealing information about the murder of Bills.
“The defendant pled guilty to significant charges in the tragic murders of these two young women, and with his cooperation the State’s case against the remaining defendant grows stronger,” said Nessel.
“I’m grateful for the cooperative investigation and prosecution of these crimes between Michigan State Police, my department’s prosecutors, and Prosecutor Muszynski and her office. We continue to work toward justice for these victims and this community.”
Alpena County Prosecutor Cynthia Muszynski added, “I believe this plea will get us one step closer to ensuring justice for these two women.”
Wirgau’s sentencing will occur in February, on a date yet to be set by the Court.
Brad Srebnik, 36, of Alpena is facing a felony charge first-degree premeditated homicide in the murder of Bills.
