Daniels accepts 82nd District Court judgeship

ROSCOMMON / OGEMAW COUNTY – Roscommon attorney Troy Daniel has accepted an appointment by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for the 82nd District Court judge’s position.

This appointment was made to fill a partial term vacated by Judge Richard Noble, who retired effective Dec. 31, 2021. Daniel’s term began April 11 and runs through Jan. 1, 2023. He has already filed to run for re-election in the Nov. 8 general election.

“After 25 years of practicing law in Roscommon County, I am graciously looking forward to serving the communities of Roscommon and Ogemaw Counties in my new role as a judge for the 82nd District Court,” Daniel said. “Being a judge is a not only a great honor, but it also provides me with an opportunity to give back to my community. I will do my best to respectfully represent all the citizens in the 82nd District Court area.”

He earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1996 from the Detroit College of Law and Bachelor of Applied Arts in Journalism and Political Science from Central Michigan University.

Originally born in Canada, he became a naturalized United States Citizen in 2008.

Daniel moved to Roscommon in 1997 where he joined the law firm of Hess, Hess, and Daniel, P.C. Prior to his appointment to the 82nd District Court judgeship, Daniel’s

Daniel is past president of Roscommon Rotary (2005-06), the year it purchased new curtains for the Roscommon High School Auditorium. He also earned the Paul Harris Award, the highest honor the organization can bestow upon its members, and is the group’s Adopt-A-Highway coordinator.

He also served as Roscommon County administrator for the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC), assigning cases to attorneys representing indigent defendants, and makes decisions regarding whether a consultant or private investigator would be helpful to a case.

Daniel’s April 11 investiture (swearing in) was attended by his brother, Jeff, who helped him put on the traditional judge’s black robe. His first visit after a gathering at Fred’s in Roscommon was to his mom’s home in Port Huron.

“My mom is happy,” Daniel said. “She worked hard as a server for 50 years to support us and our dreams. And she’s proud.”
