MyMichigan Health expands cardiovascular surgery team

REGION – As part of MyMichigan Health’s ongoing commitment to fighting heart disease, MyMichigan recently expanded its comprehensive heart and vascular team to include Cardiovascular Surgeon Meghan Halub, M.D. Dr. Halub joins an experienced cardiac surgery team which includes Cardiovascular Surgeons Alonso Collar, M.D., and Raj Gopaldas, M.D., as well as Advanced Practice Providers Samantha Papa, A.G.A.C.-B.C., D.N.P.; Beth Sheridan, A.P.R.N.-B.C., M.S.N.; and Kevin Weaver, F.N.P.-B.C., M.S.N.

As a heart surgeon, Dr. Halub specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases affecting the heart and vascular system, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, aortic aneurysms and dissections, cardiac tumors, atrial fibrillation, septal defects and heart failure.

According to Dr. Halub, she fell in love with the field of cardiothoracic surgery as a fourth-year medical student and has been an active member of the resident and fellow committees and activities ever since. “I had a great mentorship and fell in love with the field early in my training. I loved the innovations in the field along with the ability to prolong patients’ lives with surgical interventions,” she said.

Dr. Halub received her medical degree from Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine in East Lansing. Additionally, she completed fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery from The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and advanced cardiac fellowship from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

When it comes to her patients, Dr. Halub believes in establishing relationships that are built on open communication, mutual respect, empathy and trust. “I feel being a physician is one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am so grateful to have found a job that I love,” she said. “I want my patients to be comfortable with their care and confident that I, along with my colleagues, will deliver the very best cardiovascular care available. I also work hard try to get to know my patients and their families.”

Dr. Halub grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan and loves everything related to the water and outdoors. Her favorite hobbies include fishing, boating, kayaking and hiking. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with friends and family. Dr. Halub is an avid traveler and has been to every continent except Antarctica – although that’s on her travel itinerary.
