New book touts benefits of old plant

FAIRVIEW – QuickTurtle Books® and QuickTurtle New World Advertising of Fairview, has partnered with Robert Lawrason of Kenaf Partners USA in Onaway to create a children’s book to help educate current and new generations of children on the environmentally friendly and economically sound Kenaf plant.

According to Wikipedia, kenaf is an annual plant with a woody base. It has been grown in Egypt for 3000 years. Kenaf matures in 100 to 200 days. Fibers from its bark and wood are used to make rope, twine, coarse cloth, and paper. Ford and BMW are experimenting with using material made in part with kenaf for automobile bodies. Kenaf seeds yield edible vegetable oil which is being used for cosmetics, biofuel production and other industrial lubricants.

The book, ‘Seeds For Life, KENAF’, has just been made available on Amazon in both paperback and ebook. It was a Number 1 New Release in the Environment and Ecology Category for children’s books in early November.

It is the goal of the publishers to help Kenaf Partners USA to raise a new generation of advocates and entrepreneurs with enough awareness and foresight to grasp the vast possibilities inherent in this plant.

The publishers believe Kenaf’s versatility and hardiness sits on the horizon of a new generation of farmers willing to implement more environmentally friendly and sound practices across northern Michigan.
