Garden looks for growers

By Julie Crick
ROSCOMMON COUNTY – The Roscommon Community Garden is looking forward to its second growing season.

Located at the corners of Main and George Streets in the Village of Roscommon, the Garden was built to provide a source of fresh vegetables and fruits to the community. The Garden also provides a safe, comfortable place for families to enjoy and to learn more about the types of flowers, fruits and vegetables that grow well in the Roscommon Area. The Crawford-Roscommon Conservation District coordinates the Garden’ activities.

Their hard work and generosity of the businesses and volunteers who made the Garden successful, means the Garden is ready to swing into action without nearly the amount of preparation.

This year, organizers would like to see the boxes overflowing with vegetables and herbs, while adding a few fruiting trees and shrubs as well as a pollinator garden. We love to hear about people eating our vegetables – please spread the word that ripe vegetables may be picked by anyone who will put them to good use!

To make this happen, we’ll need your help! Please join us on Wednesday, April 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Roscommon County Building, Room 101, for a planning and Volunteer coordination meeting.
At the meeting, we’ll discuss what to plant in the Garden and solicit volunteers to help with the planting, watering and weeding the garden beds.

In addition, we would like to ask for volunteers who are willing to ‘share your starts!’ If you are planning to start some vegetables or flowers for your own garden, please consider starting a few extra and donate the seedlings to the Community Garden for everyone to enjoy.

Your donation of live plants will help feed and/or beautify the community! Seeds for Community Garden starts will be available at the April 5 meeting.

For questions or more information about the Roscommon Community Garden, or to donate, please contact barb.stauffer@macd.org or call 989-275-3163.
