GRAYLING – Grayling Elementary’s Extended Learning Year (ELY) students can choose to attend intersession during breaks. Intersession is a week of fun learning and activities. During this last intersession, students learned how to stay healthy in many ways.
There was a field trip to Family Fare to look at labels and find healthy food. Starbucks also surprised them with a tasty treat as well. Nicole Persing-Wethington, Nutrition Instructor, Michigan State University Extension, made healthy snacks with students.
Students also kept track of their steps each day using a pedometer provided to them by the Michigan State University Extension. Steps were counted each day and each step was worth a penny. The money earned at the end of the week will be used to buy playground equipment such as soccer balls, basketballs, etc. They also examined different body parts and organs like the heart and lungs that help to keep us healthy.
The last field trip was to Shetler Dairy Farms in Kalkaska where students saw milking cows and the process of how milk is made. And, of course, they couldn’t leave there without a yummy ice cream cone.
