‘Helping Hands’ to honor veterans

REGION – Hospice of Helping Hands will once again host their free ‘We Honor Veterans’ Celebration Services and Pinning Ceremonies across the seven-county service area of Arenac, Crawford, Gladwin, Iosco, Ogemaw, Oscoda, and Roscommon, as well as the Saginaw VA Hospital.

Nov. 1-17 there are at least 23 celebration services to honor local veterans from Army, Navy, Marines, Airforce, National Guard, and Coast Guard. Each celebration is free and includes music, a patriotic pinning ceremony, refreshments, and is assisted by local VFW and American Legion groups. All veterans of all military groups and of all ages are encouraged to participate in one of the services at area Council on Aging/Senior Centers, where the general public is also welcome and encouraged to attend to show their support of our nation’ heroes.

The ‘We Honor Veterans’ celebration services were started as an extension of your non-profit Hospice of Helping Hands’ involvement with the We Honor Veterans program – a pioneering campaign developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Our Vietnam veterans will be specially recognized with unique commemoration pins and Certificates of Honor during the We Honor Veterans pinning and celebration ceremonies. We will also add to the recognition in 2017 by including:

  • Former, living American military POWs from the Vietnam War, as listed by the Dept. of Defense
  • Immediate family members (parents, spouse, siblings, and children) of American military personnel listed as missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War by the Dept. of Defense
  • Immediate family members (parents, spouse, siblings, and children) of a veteran who is listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and who is not listed as missing or unaccounted for by the Department of Defense
  • Surviving spouse, at the time of death, of a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time from November 1, 1955 – May 15, 1975, regardless of location of service.

Hospice of Helping Hands also thanks partners Northland Area Federal Credit Union and Leelin Home Health Care who are providing special gifts for our Veterans during these events.
