Open Mic returns to Grayling

GRAYLING – Artisan Village Gallery (AVG), is bringing ‘First Friday Open Mic’ back to Grayling. Originally a fixture at the Thanks-A-Latte Coffee house, participation outgrew the space, and Open Mic was shelved for a while. AVG in downtown Grayling is bringing it back!

The stage is set, the audience is waiting. And AVG is looking for all the closet poets, shower vocalists, wannabe storytellers and novice musicians to take to the stage.

Open Mic will be held the first Friday of each month in 2018 from 7 – 9 p.m. Mark your calendar for Feb 2, when Ruth Hankins, local artist and author, will get the party started with selections themed ‘Object Lessons’.

If you’re not yet ready to step on the stage, come on in and support your fellow artists. Artisan Village is a family friendly environment and looks forward to the monthly Open Mic experience!

AVG has gone from fledgling artist cooperative to successful 501c3 Art Gallery in just a few years. If you haven’t been in lately, you’re missing the improvements that they have been working hard to complete. In addition to the new display areas, new lighting, and artful gates that open into the stage area and Wine Room next door, AVG has been working hard on improvements to the basement. A new class room is taking shape and a new wheelchair lift has been installed, making the Creativity Center accessible to everyone. Classes for kids, like acting, painting, paper mache and photography are in the works. Adult classes are being organized and of course Uncorked Classes have continued through Paddlehard Brewery.

Even as all these new things are happening, The Gallery continues to provide display for local artists work and the stage area continues to host the monthly, third Wednesday concerts that so many have enjoyed this past year.

It’s worth noting that the Board of Directors, the Gallery Director and Assistant Director, Committee Chairs, and all of the staff who operate the gallery are Volunteers. Every year as more people become members of the gallery, and more new artists and volunteers join AVG, they are able to extend the community oriented activities they can offer and improve the quality of the cultural experience here in Northern Michigan. It says a lot about a community that so much time and energy is expended to make Grayling a cultural and entertainment destination.

The gallery is open 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesdays thru Sundays. More information can be found at aavart.org.
