No one injured in Penny Lumber blaze

PRUDENVILLE – This morning at approximately 8 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post assisted Denton Township Fire Department (FD) with a large structure fire at Penney’s Lumber on M-18 in Prudenville. The fire spread to a neighboring trailer park as well.

According to Spl/Lt. Derrick Carroll of the Michigan State Police, while on scene troopers were requested by Denton Township Fire Department to have DTE shut off a natural gas meter that was burning on the front of Penney’s Lumber, as well as a burning vacant lot in the neighboring trailer park. 

The investigation to determine the cause of the fire continues.

DTE only had one crew member on scene to dig up the gas line. Troopers grabbed their shovels and started digging to locate the gas line. A deputy from the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the dig.

The owner of Penney’s Lumber discovered the fire when he opened for business this morning. Two trailers and a shed were also damaged during the fire.

Crews are still working on the scene. The investigation to determine the cause of the fire continues, however arson is not suspected at this time.
