Bucks top Harrison, Farwell in league matchups

By Greg Gielczyk

ROSCOMMON — One streak ended, and another started for the Roscommon girls basketball team as the Bucks put the brakes on a four-game losing streak with back-to-back home victories over Harrison, 44-39 on Tuesday, Jan. 31 and 35-29 over Farwell on Thursday, Feb. 2.

It brought the Bucks two games closer to .500 for the season with a 6-8 record overall, and within hailing distance of the break even point in the Jack Pine Conference as well at 4-6. Although the league title is clearly out of reach for the Bucks, they hope to continue this momentum down the home stretch heading into the post-season.

The Bucks led at every quarter stop against Farwell after finishing the first up, 12-8. It was 19-15 at the half and then 29-21 after three.

Sydney Blanchard and Kaeley Hahn each scored eight points to lead the Bucks on offense. Emily Barnhart was a presence inside and claimed 11 rebounds on the night while chipping in two points, one assist and one steal.

Blanchard grabbed seven rebounds and added one block, one steal and one assist. Peyton Church scored seven points to go along with two rebounds and one steal. Maria Jobin had three rebounds and Morgan Thomas two assists. Hahn also had four rebounds, one steal and one assist. Gwyneth Murray grabbed four rebounds.

“Farwell to its credit played a nice game,” coach Scott Mires said. “They handled our pressure which they didn’t do the first time around. It was good to get two wins in a week. We still have a ways to go.

“We’re getting a ton of shots off, but we’re not shooting well. We’re going to continue to work on that and see if we can improve our shooting by five or 10 percent. The remaining games are going to be competitive.”
