Hale girls basketball tops Hillman, 45-38

HILLMAN – Hale’s girls basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak to start the season with a 45-38 victory over Hillman in a North Star Little Dipper contest in Hillman last Friday.

Olivia Rasch paced the Eagles with 23 points, the majority of them coming on 11 of 16 free throws and hitting on two 3-point field goal attempts. She also hauled down five rebounds and picked off three steals.

Scoring took a steep dive after her though, as fellow senior Karli Lacosse contributed six points, followed by junior Brooke Pelton with five and senior Kiara Ludwig and freshman Abigail Parkinson each with four.

Lacosse and Ludwig each grabbed five rebounds to tie Rasch for the team lead in that department, while Pelton and Claudia Caldwell each snagged while Jasmine Harris pulled down three. Caldwell and Rasch each had two assists, while Ludwig and Parkinson had one apiece.

“It was a nice win for us up in Hillman,” said Hale coach Ryan Parkinson. “We showed improvement again on the defensive end of the floor. I really thought we made them take a lot of tough shots and were better about rebounding the ball. Offensively, we still have to work to cut down on the turnovers and find some inside/outside balance. We had some really solid possessions and the progress is nice to see. I thought Jasmine Harris was good for us in the middle. She did a nice job being active on the boards. Brooke Pelton and Kiara Ludwig both were tough and knocked down some big shots. Olivia created in some tough spots and is looking better game to game”.

The Eagles took an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and had a 13-12 edge in the second for a 24-20 lead at the half. Hillman outscored the Eagles, 9-5 in a low scoring third quarter to knot the score at 29-29 going into the fourth period. Hale prevailed, though, with a 13-7 advantage in the final eight minutes.
