Local anglers land tagged fish in contest

HOUGHTON LAKE’A number of local anglers caught tagged fish in the 2017-18 Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau’ Catch Us If You Can fishing contest. They are now entered in the April 8 grand prize drawing at Spicer’ Boat City in Houghton Lake. The grand prize is $100,000 and Lund boat from Spicer’. There is a guaranteed major prize of $1000.00 cash. The second-place prize is a Mark Martin Ice Fishing School valued at $500.

Mark Duncan of St. Helen was fishing Lake St. Helen in July 2017 when he caught a tagged blue gill.

Duncan was fishing off a pontoon on Lake One.

‘I am retired so I get to go out fishing about three times a week,’ he said. ‘My favorite fish to go after are crappies.’

Jordan Wilson (8) was fishing Houghton Lake on January 21 when he caught a 23-and one-half-inch pike.

He had his catch verified at contest sponsor Lyman’ on Lake in Houghton Lake and received a $50 gas card.

Jordan has been fishing since he was five with his dad and grandfather. He has a stocked pond at home where he goes out every chance he gets.

‘I was on my hole with a blue minnow on the pole,’ he said. ‘I only had to wait 10-12 minutes before I caught the pike. I was really happy.’

‘Jordon loves hunting and fishing,’ his mother, Kourtney Henry, said. ‘He loves hunting and fishing. I have to always call him to come in to eat.’

Randy Sherbino was fishing Lake St. Helen on January 26 when he caught a 20-inch pike.

He also registered his fish at Lyman’ on the Lake and received a $50 gas card.

Sherbino retired from Spicer’ Boat City and is looking forward to being a contestant instead of an employee during the drawing.

‘I want to be the first big winner,’ he said.

‘I get to fish anytime I want and have a secret spot where I always catch something.’

He caught the tagged fish on a tip up using live minnows.

There are more than 300 tagged fish in Michigan’ Other Great Lakes (Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake and Lake St. Helen).

Anglers can bring their tagged fish in for verification at Lyman’ and H&H Fireworks in Houghton Lake, as well as Korbinski’ Marine in Prudenville, West Higgins Lake Hardware at Higgins Lake, and Si End Motel in St. Helen.
