Protecting Michigan Waters: 12 Groups Awarded Clean Boats, Clean Waters Grants
NORTHERN MICHIGAN – Whether you’re paddling a quiet river, reading at the beach, or fishing from a boardwalk, chances are you’ve enjoyed Michigan’s waters this summer. Protecting these natural resources from threats like aquatic invasive species requires all of us to take part.
Earlier this season, the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program awarded $35,000 in grants to 12 conservation organizations across the state. These funds support education and outreach efforts to prevent the spread of invasive species through boating and water recreation.
2024 Northern Michigan grant recipients include:
- Alger Conservation District – Hosting four outreach events at the Au Train River, Au Train Lake campground, and Munising Marina.
- Charter Township of Long Lake – Installing a decontamination station at Bass Lake and distributing educational pamphlets.
- Platte Lake Improvement Association – Installing multiple decontamination stations and co-hosting events with the Benzie Conservation District.
These organizations will carry out their efforts throughout the summer by hosting events, installing signage at boat launches, and running outreach campaigns.
Their collective work promotes the “Clean, Drain, Dry” message—essential steps for anyone moving watercraft between Michigan’s lakes and rivers.
