Martin’s Ice Fishing School returns to Houghton Lake

HOUGHTON LAKE – The Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau (HLATB) is welcoming Mark Martin’ Vacation Ice Fishing School back to Houghton Lake for the second year in a row. The course will run from Jan. 8 – 11.

Last year he came to Houghton Lake with a week’ notice as the warm temperatures kept safe ice off of many lakes and Saginaw Bay where the school was to be conducted. This year Martin is hosting his first of three schools on the ice of Houghton Lake.

‘We are excited to return to Houghton Lake,’ Martin said. ‘Last year the community welcomed us, as well as the outdoor sports writers that travel with us, with open arms. As a result, there were many articles and blogs published highlighting the great ice fishing on the lake.’

‘Mark and his pro staff are outstanding teachers and his students have a lot of fun,’ said Kurt Beachnau of Lyman’ on the Lake and vice-president of the HLATB board. ‘We are thrilled to have him here again.’

Students attending the school are coming from Holland, Roscommon, Houghton Lake, Fenton, Lake City, Norton Shores, Montague and Waterford.

One student, Gary Vandermulen of Lake City, appreciated fishing with Mark Martin years ago.
‘He is such a nice guy I am excited for this opportunity to fish with him on Houghton Lake,’ he said.

Vandermulen is a long time angler on Houghton Lake. Retired now, he does some custom wood carving and has designed two plaques for Martin to give to the students, one for the biggest fish and one for the most improved.

Martin and his support staff arrive January 5 to do some pre-fishing on the lake. Students will arrive January 8 to begin the school that kicks off with a free seminar on ice fishing tips and tricks. The public is invited to attend the free seminar at 12 p.m. Jan. 8 at H&H Fireworks, Houghton Lake.

For more information on the school or seminar, please call the HLATB at 989-422-2002.
