Neil Rouse, 83, of Grayling

Neil James Rouse, 83, of Grayling, Michigan, passed away on July 7, 2026.

Neil was born June 15th, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan. He later moved to Frederic with his family, where he met the love of his life, Shirley. Early in his career, Neil worked for Bear Archery alongside legendary bow hunter Fred Bear. When Bear Archery relocated, Neil and Shirley moved with the company to Gainesville, Florida, where they lived for several years before eventually returning to Northern Michigan and making Grayling their home.

In 1968, Neil married Shirley Rouse at Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayling. Shirley was the center of Neil’s world, and he always put her first no matter what. Before moving to Florida, Neil and Shirley welcomed their three children. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage, creating a lifetime of memories built on love, loyalty, and devotion.

Neil proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Throughout his life, Neil dedicated himself to serving others and providing for his family. He served as a police officer for the City of Grayling, where he took pride in protecting and serving his community. Neil also worked as a branch manager for RC Cola, a job that was a natural fit for someone who enjoyed meeting and talking with people. Later in life, Neil and Shirley worked together running a water plant, sharing another chapter of their lives side by side. After retirement, Neil continued staying active by working as a security guard at Springs.

Outside of work, Neil loved spending time outdoors; hunting, fishing, bird watching, and rock collecting, especially Michigan pudding stones. He enjoyed the simple things in life. You could often find him with a cup of coffee or an RC Cola in hand, ready to share a story, have a laugh, and spend time with family and friends. He had a playful sense of humor and loved teasing the people he cared about. He jokingly referred to himself as “the agitator,” a nickname that brought smiles to those who knew him best.

More than anything, Neil loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who treasured every moment spent with those he loved. His family was his greatest joy, and he took pride in the memories they shared together.

Neil is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Rouse; his daughter, Jennifer Rouse; his grandchildren, Christopher, Melinda, Alyssa, Daisi, Chelsey, Autumn, Wyatt, Evelyn, Dylan and Camron; and his great-grandchildren, Shane, Isobel, April, Ezra, Owen, Christopher Jr., Laramie, Ophelia, Kyla, and Bellamy.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanie Kelly; his sister, Barbara Hatfield; his children, Dawn Walsh Cumberworth and Robert Rouse; and his grandson, Kyle Kuznicki.

Neil will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength, playful spirit, love of the outdoors, and the unwavering love he had for Shirley and his family. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
