Virginia ‘Gin’ Syversen, 86, of Gladwin

Virginia (Gin) Earlene Syversen of Gladwin, MI passed away peacefully on May 10, 2024. She was born in Beaverton, MI on February 18th, 1938, to Earl and Ruth (Bourlier) Wilson. Virginia graduated from Whittemore High School. She worked for Buick for many years as administrative support and held various positions, retiring with her husband, Roy Syversen in 1996.

Gin was a ball of fire and a “get things done” woman. She spent years dedicated to the “Friends of Firefighters”, leading pancake breakfasts and Hunter dinners, all to support the volunteer fire fighters and the community.

As an avid quilter, she took great pride in the precision of her hand stitching. Some who didn’t know her work may have thought it was machine stitching. Prior to her late husband’s long illness, she kept a beautiful garden and flower beds. You could find her out in the garden during hot and humid weather tending to her plants.

She had a soft-spoken demeanor to a take charge, give directives woman who was loved and cherished by many. Growing up and living in rural and farming communities, she had that welcoming nature. If a friend showed up unannounced, she would joyfully offer coffee or whatever she was cooking. Gin was cherished by many; she spoke fondly of the “Taco Tuesday” friends and many other friends.

If you spoke with her, she was full of historical family stories and information. Her family and friends enjoyed and valued her knowledge. Some say she could have written a book. She loved her two children, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren unconditionally, you could feel and trust her love.

For people who knew and loved her, we feel a large vacant space in our hearts and lives.

Gin is survived by her children, Laurie McGovern of DE, Eric (Karen) Syversen of Commerce Township, MI; grandchildren, Amber (Scott) Fouty, Trevor McGovern, Amelia Syversen, Alec Syversen; great grandchildren, Oliver Fouty and Liam Fouty; her sister-cousin Tuck Clendening, her sister Sandy (Tom) Kehn; a niece and nephew; and many cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, with a visitation hour from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and a service at 12:00 pm at Twining Funeral Home. Internment will take place at 1:00pm at Saints Cemetery in Whittemore, MI. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com
