Joe Ludwig, 82, of Houghton Lake

Joseph (Joe) Michael Ludwig, age 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at his home on Houghton Lake surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born on February 1, 1942 in Flint, MI to Frank and Lyndell Marie (Sprague) Ludwig. He married Emma Jean (Jeannie) Bennett on May 4, 1963. That union produced Joseph Michael Ludwig Jr. of Waterford, MI and Denise Michele Ludwig Putman of Fenton, MI.

Joe, or Pa and Papa as he was lovingly called by his 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, was employed by General Motors for 38 years as a proud UAW Skilled Tradesman at the V-8 Engine Plant in Flint, retiring in 1999. He also served as a 3 term Skilled Trades Committeeman for UAW Local 659. Joe proudly served in the Michigan National Guard as well. He graduated from Holy Redeemer in 1960.

Joe loved nothing more than to spend time with his family. Each one had their unique place in his heart and he shared his pride and love with them often. His family was able to express their love for him prior to his passing, which was an amazing gift. He loved listening to his music, golf, fishing, playing cards and dancing with his bride of 61 years. He will be deeply and profoundly missed by his family and friends. He battled hard and never gave up.

Joe is survived by his wife of 61 years, Emma Jean Ludwig; his children Joseph Michael Ludwig Jr. (Tammy) and Denise Ludwig Putman. His grandchildren; Joseph (Cassidy) Ludwig, Ashela (Doug) Boven, Hunter Ludwig, Haley Ludwig, Peter Putman, Connor Putman and Devlin Putman. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Marie Ludwig and his beloved son-in-law, Terry Putman.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Christler Funeral Home, 1471 West Houghton Lake Drive, Prudenville, MI 48651, from 2 PM – 8 PM. A Christian funeral service will be held at the Houghton Lake Global Methodist Church on Sunday, May 19, 2024, 7059 W Houghton Lake Drive, Houghton Lake, MI 48629. There will be a 12:30 PM viewing and the service will begin at 1:30 PM. There will be a luncheon to follow. Pastor Kevin Harbin officiating.

In lieu of flowers and if so inclined, the family has requested any donations be made to the Special Olympics. Joe volunteered at these events, and it is a cause very near and dear to his heart.
