Richard Russell, Sr., 76, of Standish

Richard Vaughn Russell, Sr., a cherished soul known for his selfless and spirited nature, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024, in Standish, Michigan. Born on November 26, 1947, in Lapeer, Michigan, Richard’s journey through life was marked by an unwavering love for his family, a passion for storytelling, and a heart as generous as it was loving.

Richard’s life was a testament to the power of love and the strength of family bonds. He found his greatest joy in the company of his life partner and soul mate, Marsha Kay Metiva, with whom he shared a love that was deep and enduring. Together, they created a blended family that was a source of immense pride and happiness for Richard. His children, Richard “Rick” (Jennifer) Russell, Tanya Lofback, Todd (Jill) Russell, Sheena Russell, Melissa (Roy) Niedzielski, and Kyle Metiva, will forever cherish the memories and lessons imparted by their father.

The legacy of Richard’s love and guidance will live on through his grandchildren, Tyler (Ashton) Lofback, Dakota (Taylor) Yokom, Kailee Russell, Brienna Russell, Lily Russell, Alexander Metiva, Ethan Niedzielski, Alexis Dunham and Justine Matako, as well as his great-grandchild, Carter (Alexis). Each of them was a source of immense joy and pride for Richard, and he delighted in their every achievement and milestone. His grand dog, Zoe, also held a special place in his heart.

Richard was a man of many stories and an even greater number of friends. He is survived by his siblings, Rodney Russell, Robin Russell, and Sherry Russell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will miss his larger-than-life presence. His special friends, Samantha Freehling and her mom Kelly, will remember him fondly for the laughter and warmth he brought into their lives.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Eleanor Russell, his father, Robert Russell, and his brothers, Ronald Russell, Robert Russell Jr., and Reggie Russell. Richard also held close to his heart the memory of his infant grandson, Brendon Lofback, and his four feline companions, Fisher, Frankee, Tinky, and Baby Tif.

Richard’s life was marked by a series of achievements and associations that spoke to his character. He was a golden glove boxer in his youth, a testament to his toughness and fighting spirit. Yet, those who knew him best will attest that he was also a great big teddy bear, capable of immense tenderness and empathy. His love for animals was evident in his care for his cats, including all the feral ones he encountered, reflecting his innate kindness.

His stories were legendary, filled with humor and wisdom, and he had the rare gift of being able to captivate any audience. Richard’s ability to tell a tale was matched only by his reluctance to ever burden others, especially his children, with whom he shared a profound and abiding connection.

Richard’s life was one of giving, and his spirit of generosity extended beyond his immediate circle. He was a man who lived by example, demonstrating the virtues of selflessness and love in every action. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we bid farewell to Richard Vaughn Russell, Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, and his memory will be a beacon of love and strength for generations to come. Richard’s story does not end here; it lives on in the hearts of those he touched, in the laughter of his grandchildren, and in the quiet moments when we remember the love he so freely gave.
