Karl Gawne Sr., 93, of St. Helen

Karl Ivan Gawne Sr., 93, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland, MI. He was born on March 12, 1930, in North Kingsville, OH, to Howard and Ruth (Johnson) Gawne. He lived in St. Helen, MI since 1979, formerly of Saginaw, MI.

Karl proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.

Karl was a lifetime member of the E.A.A. – Experimental Aircraft Association, reflecting his passion for aviation. He loved attending air shows and spending time around airplanes. In his spare time, Karl enjoyed working on his cars and traveling. He spent winters at his brother’s house in Virginia. Most of all, he cherished his time with his family. He was a private but religious man, finding solace in his faith.

Karl will be deeply missed by his children: Patti (Richard) Williams of St. Charles, MI, Kathy Fritts of St. Helen, Karl (Marylee) Gawne Jr. of Oscoda, MI, and Michelle Gawne of St. Louis, MI. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Jim Lewis of Sarasota, FL, as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Karl was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Carol, his sons Jim and Kenny, his daughter Robin, his brother Roger, and his sisters Vicki and Janice.

Visitation will be held at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in St. Helen on Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The funeral service, including military honors, will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Contributions in Karl’s memory can be made to the Yankee Air Force Museum or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
