Laura Witt, 67, of Roscommon

Laura Lynn Witt, age 67, of Roscommon, left to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at home surrounded by her loving family.

A celebration of her life will be held, Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the First Congregational Church, 109 South Main Street, Roscommon, Michigan, 48653. The family will receive friends starting at 10:00 AM, until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. Food, fellowship and probably a little fun will follow at the Witt Family Barn where memories of Laura will be shared.

Laura was born August 19, 1956, in Detroit, the daughter of Harold and Barbara (Hakalow) Mayer who preceded her in death.

She married her soul mate, James D. Witt on May 8, 1976, in Garden City. Jim truly was the love of her life. They loved being together and often embarrassed their boys when they would hold each other’s hands in public.

One of the big things they did together was to restore Laura’s first car, a 1969 Chevelle SS. They also worked together at their business in Roscommon, Jim’s Collision, for over 30 years with Laura as the office manager.

Their love was admired by all who met them. That love expanded as the boys married and the grandchildren, Abigale, and Travis, were born. She found a space in her heart filled that she didn’t know was empty and it was for loving them as only a grandmother can do.

Laura’s heart also was open to her community and she showed it in many ways. She was responsible for the oohs, aahs, and thunderous applause from kids of all ages at the fabulous fireworks display in Roscommon that she organized every Fourth of July for 25 years.

She not only opened her heart but also her home for use of the family barn in Witt Mayer Woods for community and personal use. Many organizations annually utilize the barn for fundraising dinners and several weddings have taken place there. She was also a member of First Congregational Church in Roscommon, where she had led the youth group, sat on many boards and committees, and served as a trustee.

She had a contagious smile, a great sense of humor, and loved the beauty of what nature had to offer. She was particularly fond of Higgins Lake and would often refer to it as “her lake.” She would take long walks sometimes just in “her woods” and other times she could be seen walking up Pioneer Hill to enjoy the panoramic view the top of the hill has to offer.

Fast cars were a passion for Laura as evidenced by that Chevelle that she still had. She also relished slow sailing especially on the waters surrounding Culebra, on their sailboat, Perseverance, their second home, for over 15 years.

Laura will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Jim; sons, Stephen (Amanda) and Patrick (Kara); and grandchildren, Abigale, and Travis.

Those wishing to honor Laura’s memory may do so with a donation to the Roscommon Fireworks, 451 West Federal Highway, Roscommon, Michigan 48653.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wagner and Walsh Funeral Directors, Roscommon.
