Irene ‘Tootie’ Hughes, 88, of Tawas City

Irene (Tootie) Catherine Hughes, age 88, of Tawas City passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 4, 2023. Irene was born on October 26, 1934 to August and Irene (Taschner) Lorenz.  On May 14, 1954 she married Buryl Hughes and they built a life together raising nine children. She was Tawas Township Treasurer for a few years before becoming Iosco County Deputy Treasurer until her retirement in 1996.She most loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Irene enjoyed quilting, gardening, bowling, reading and playing cards with her friends. She was an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. Irene is survived by her husband of 69 years, Buryl Hughes and her children Dennis (Janet) Hughes, Barbara (Mitchell) Lenczewski, Kenneth (Renee) Hughes, Joan (Bruce) Stroede, Donna (Joseph) Dear, Patricia (Curtis) Bigham, Thomas (Mary) Hughes, Sharon (Terry) Yates, daughter-in-law Brenda Hughes, brother Bernie Lorenz, sister-in-law Joan Lorenz, 22 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, son David Hughes, infant daughter Susan, brother Charles (Chum) Lorenz, and sister-in-law Daisy Lorenz. The funeral mass will take place at 11:00 am Thursday, August 10 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 516 W. Lincoln St., East Tawas.  Rev. Father Lawrence Boks will officiate with burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday August 9 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Buresh Funeral Home, Tawas City and at the church from 10:00 am Thursday until the time of the service. Those wishing to make memorial contributions as an expression of sympathy, please consider Holy Family School or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
