Helen Wiergowski, 82, of Tawas City

Helen Lucille (Philpot) Wiergowski passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023, in Detroit, MI. She was born on April 18, 1940, in Flint, MI to George W. and Alice L. (Keast) Philpot.

Helen was a lifelong resident of Tawas City, MI. It was in Tawas that she owned and operated Strauer’s Market for 40+ years. She was a full-time butcher and was proud to be the first female butcher in the state of Michigan. Helen was known for reaching out to others in their time of need through gifting deli trays and food items to the families. She enjoyed music, bowling and was especially known for her baking. She was a long-time member of the Quota Club International.

Helen is survived by her children, Fred (Juli) Strauer, and Tarri M. (John) Sanders; stepson, Rick Wiergowski; grandchildren, Nicholaus, Erin, R.J., Jonathan, Liam, Lillian, and Aiden; great grandchildren, Phoenix and Sienna; step grandsons, Marshall and John; step great granddaughter, Jacqueline; sisters, Ruth Ann Walter and Alice (Dave) Baldwin. In addition to her husband Dick Wiergowski, she is preceded in death by her parents; son, Dale H. Strauer II, grandson, Jeremy; stepdaughter, Mary Kay Wiergowski; sisters, Esther Mollo, Betty Rollin, and Doris Phillips; brothers, Bill Philpot and George E. Philpot. A special thanks to her neighbor Ivan Watts for looking out for Helen and being a wonderful friend.

The family will welcome friends on Friday, March 3, 2023, from 3:00 – 7:00 pm at Buresh Funeral Homes in Tawas, MI. There will be an additional time of visitation at the First Baptist Church in Tawas, MI on Saturday, March 4, 2023, from 1:00 until time of service at 2:00 pm.
