Preston Haynes, age 84, passed away on January 21, 2023, in Alger, Michigan with his family at his side. Preston was born on February 22, 1938, in Tryon, North Carolina, to the late General Lee Haynes and Carrie Lee Lightle. He spent his childhood growing up in North Carolina, and his family then moved to Detroit, Michigan when he was sixteen. Following his childhood years, Preston became an entrepreneur in the restaurant industry, as he opened up several family style restaurants all around Detroit. In 1988, he married the love of his life, Sandra Smith, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and the two shared 34 amazing years together. Preston was a member of the American Legion, the Mason Shriners, and the local Moose Lodge. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, wine making, watching Nascar, western movies, and New York Yankee baseball.
Preston is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Haynes; children, Dennis (Nancy) Haynes and Ralph Haynes; stepchildren, Angela Smith and Shannon (Bryan) Moore; grandchildren, Steven, Joshua, Brett, Emmie, Forest, and Cara; two great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; brother, Thomas Haynes; and his sister, Doris (Ray) Cagle. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Jannie Lee and brothers, Robert Haynes, John Haynes and J.D. Haynes.
Per Preston’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a private ceremony held at a later date.
