Tom Hinkelman, 73, of National City

On Wednesday, January 19, 2022 the world lost a very special soul. Thomas “Tom” J. Hinkelman, 73, of National City passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas, Michigan surrounded by his loved ones.


Tom was born January 29, 1948 in Highland Park, Michigan to Edward and Opha Hinkelman. The youngest child of 6, Tom learned to be patient, kind, caring and generous.


After joining the Army in 1968, Tom earned several medals for marksmanship and honorable service prior to his discharge in 1974.


Tom worked for many years as a carpenter. He used his unlimited talents and incredible vision to improve the lives and homes of his family and friends. Tom also had the honor of acting as the sexton of Pioneer Cemetery in Grant Township for many years, taking over after his brother retired from this position. 


Tom is survived by the love of his life, Michelle and four children. Timothy (Cindy) of Arizona, Candi Jo of Michigan, Scott of Florida, and stepson, Chad, also of Michigan.
Tom was blessed with 9 grandchildren,1 great grandchild and was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews. Tom is also survived by his loving brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Nancy Hinkelman.


There was an especially close bond between Tom and his surviving brother, Carl. Their relationship brought great joy to both men’s lives.


Tom was preceded in death by his parents and four of his siblings. Alton, Rhea, Raymond (Bud) and Alice were sorely missed by the remaining brothers.
Tom will be welcomed into heaven by Michelle’s parents, Donald and Thelma, who considered him one of their own for more than 35 years.


A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date to be announced. Those wishing to express their condolences are encouraged to make a charitable donation to a veteran’s group or veteran’s organization of your choice. 


We will all remember Tom’s kind and loving spirit and will continue to hold him close in our minds and in our hearts.
