Joseph Lee Stuart of Houghton Lake

Joseph Lee Stuart, 74, of Houghton Lake passed away November 10, 2016 at McLaren Bay Regional Hospital in Bay City with his loving children by his side.

He was born on July 1, 1942 in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia to William and Mary (Stuart) Sipfle. The family moved from West Virginia to Houghton Lake in the early 1950’s staying in his grandfather’ cabin.

He was employed for five years by General Motors and then decided to move back to Houghton Lake, where he was employed by Hughes Sawmill, Anderson Block Plant, and then spent 15 years working for Oster and Son Masonry learning the masonry trade. With encouragement from the Oster family, he started his own masonry business, J.S. Masonry of Houghton Lake, which he operated until his retirement.

Starting with his first bike in the 1960’s he has been an avid motorcycle rider ever since.

Surviving are his son, Kendall Steepe of Houghton Lake; daughter, Jessica (Jack) Yoder of Kissimmee, FL; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his life companion, Janice Sangwin of Houghton Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services were conducted at Roscommon Township Cemetery, Houghton Lake.

Memorial contributions in memory of Joe are asked to be directed to the Roscommon County Animal Shelter.

Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family.
