Feds set PFAS stronger drinking water rules

NORTHEAST MICHIGAN – The federal government has established drinking water rules that are stronger than the Michigan legislature set, in an attempt to protect residents from PFAS pollution.

The establishment of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWAR) for per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) signals a crucial advancement in addressing water contamination concerns nationwide. Members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation, state lawmakers, and the Great Lakes PFAS Action Network (GLPAN) have lauded this development, emphasizing its paramount importance in safeguarding public health.

Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin hailed the enforceable standards for PFAS contamination, citing Michigan’s enduring commitment to water quality issues since the Flint water crisis. She underscored the significance of federal intervention in setting nationwide standards, emphasizing their impact on communities across the country.

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell commended the Biden Administration and EPA Administrator Regan for prioritizing clean and safe drinking water. She stressed the ongoing need to eliminate PFAS from products and the environment, emphasizing the imperative of collaborative action at all levels of government.

Congressman Dan Kildee, co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force, emphasized the urgency of addressing PFAS in drinking water to protect communities from the hazardous effects of these chemicals.

Michigan Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks echoed these sentiments, highlighting the EPA’s strengthened drinking water standards for PFAS as instrumental in safeguarding communities affected by water contamination.

Overall, the finalization of these drinking water standards represents a significant stride in tackling PFAS contamination and upholding public health nationwide.
