CRAWFORD COUNTY, MI – On Sunday, February 13, 2022, shortly before 7:30 p.m. a trooper from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post stopped a Ford Escape for speeding on northbound I- 75 near S. Grayling Road. The vehicle pulled over and the trooper contacted the driver, a 31-year-old Mt. Pleasant man. The man had an involuntary mental state-wide pick-up order. While the trooper was waiting for confirmation of the order, the man exited the vehicle and said he needed to urinate. After he finished urinating the trooper attempted to arrest him. The man resisted and a struggle ensued. During the struggle the man produced a can of mace and sprayed the trooper. The trooper deployed his taser, but it had no effect on the man. The struggle continued and the trooper deployed chemical spray. The man was able to enter the passenger side of his vehicle and sped away. The trooper pursued and notified dispatch of the pursuit. Crawford County Sheriff’s Office Deputies assisted in the pursuit.
The pursuit continued into Roscommon County and Roscommon County Sheriff’s Deputies joined the pursuit. Stop sticks were deployed and both passenger side tires were deflated. The suspect continued driving and several pursuit immobilization technique (PIT) maneuvers were attempted. The pursuit ended on N. Central Drive in Roscommon.
The man was taken to Grayling Munson Hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being lodged in the Crawford County Jail. The man remains lodged in the jail pending arraignment. The trooper was not injured.
