Black Iron Days 2018 recap

Hartwick Pines State Park held their annual Black Iron Days Aug. 25-26, 2018.

Aug. 25 and 26, Blacksmiths had their forges set up under tents at the logging museum, demonstrating and selling their wares. Other artisans including carvers and spinners were also there, many in period clothing. And the park had their steam-powered sawmill running.

Along with showing how to lace snowshoes (and taking reservations for the Park’s snowshoe making classes) Craig Kasmer, Interpreter at Hartwick Pines, was steaming and bending wood to make Trekking toboggans. These toboggans weren’t for riding down hills, they were for piling your supplies on and hauling to the next camp during winter in the logging days.
