Joint Land Use Study Available for Public Input

GAYLORD—The Northeast Michigan Council of Governments (NEMCOG) needs your help. NEMCOG is seeking public comment on the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center (JMTC) and Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) Joint Land Use Study (JLUS).

The JLUS identifies recommended actions to manage the impacts of military missions on the health, safety, and welfare of those living, working, and recreating near these military installations, as well as on economic development in the surrounding communities. This report is the culmination of a collaborative process that began in spring 2017, and public participation is critical to ensuring all pertinent issues are addressed by the recommendations.

The report can be accessed at http://www.discovernortheastmichigan.org/jlus.asp. Please submit any comments to dmcline@nemcog.org by September 16, 2018.

Public meetings were held in June 2017, October 2017, and April 2018 to gather input from stakeholders and for the JLUS Project Team to present their initial findings. Ongoing communication with the project’s technical committee and policy committee has also helped inform the report. The project is now nearing completion, and the report will be finalized after this comment window closes. A final presentation will be held in the local communities in October 2018.

NEMCOG is leading the JLUS strategic planning process for Camp Grayling JMTC and Alpena CRTC through a grant from the US Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment with matching funds from the State of Michigan.

More information on the JLUS project is available on NEMCOG’s website at http://www.discovernortheastmichigan.org/jlusoverview.asp.
