Beaver, Beer and Banjos in Lovells

LOVELLS – ‘Beaver, Beer and Banjo’ when have you ever used those words in one sentence? The Lovells Township Historical Society does every July.

This trio will be ‘enjoyed’ once again on July 22 from 6-9 p.m. at the Riverside Tavern in Lovells.

How did all three get put together for one evening?
According to local history, this event is a revival of a 1950s dinner that featured beaver. Pat Harwood (a Lovells’ businessman, fly tier and trapper) would save some of his winter trapped beaver, and his wife, Margie would roast the beaver and take it to Roy Scott’ Bar (now the Riverside Tavern), where everyone from town was invited for a free beaver dinner.

Over 60 years later, on July 22, the Lovells Township Historical Society will be serving up a delicious beaver stew (sort of like beef barley), beer will flow and Barry Van Guilder will be making toes tap to pickings on his banjo. The festivities take place on the patio of the Riverside Tavern overlooking the North Branch of the Au Sable River. Lovells is located in Crawford County on County Road 612 between the towns of Frederic and Lewiston.

A 50/50 raffle and silent auction will also raise monies for the Anna Biernat Scholarship fund for students in Lovells Township and Crawford County to attend Kirtland Community College.
