GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers discovered a sleeping driver with a handgun after finding a vehicle crashed into a snowbank on Boardman Avenue near State Street in Traverse City on Dec. 14.
According to an MSP statement, troopers approached the vehicle, which was still running, they found the driver asleep and initially unresponsive. Troopers entered the vehicle and observed a handgun in the driver’s pocket. The handgun was removed as troopers attempted to wake the driver.
When the driver awoke, he allegedly became assaultive toward law enforcement. He was taken into custody and lodged at the Grand Traverse County Jail.
The driver was identified as 26-year-old Jacob Miller of White Cloud. Miller was arraigned Dec. 19 in 86th District Court in Grand Traverse County on the following charges:
- Count One: Weapons offense — carrying a concealed weapon
- Count Two: Weapons offense — possession by a felon
- Count Three: Operating while intoxicated
- Count Four: Police officer — assault/resist/obstruct
- Count Five: Weapons offense — felony firearm
Miller was given a $25,000 cash or surety bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Troopers were assisted by the Traverse City Police Department and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
