M-33 project to start today; Bridges in Bay undergo repair

NORTHERN MICHIGAN — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced today that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin road and bridge repair projects this week in several counties, including Oscoda, Ogemaw, and Bay.

“By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let’s build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs,” Whitmer said.

In Ogemaw and Oscoda counties, MDOT will invest $3 million to repave 11.8 miles of M-33, from north of Borden Road in Rose City to 14th Street in Mio.

The project, expected to support 29 jobs, begins Monday, Aug. 4 and is scheduled to be completed by Friday, Sept. 26.

Work will require single-lane closures with traffic regulators. Improvements will extend the roadway’s service life and include new pavement markings and rumble strips.

In Bay County, MDOT will invest about $400,000 to add epoxy overlays on several I-75 bridges from north of U.S. 10 to the M-13 connector.

This project, expected to support three jobs, begins Tuesday, Aug. 5, and is scheduled to finish Thursday, Aug. 14. Drivers should expect up to two lanes closed in each direction during the work, which is weather-dependent. The upgrades will provide a smoother driving surface and improve safety.
