Rosco landfill leaching PFAS; Well water not affected at current time

ROSCOMMON – The State of Michigan announced that PFAS are leaching from the former Roscommon County Landfill.
According to a statement from the Michigan Dept. of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), the Roscommon County Landfill, located at 3401 Landfill Road, began operations in the late 1970s and was closed in the mid-1990s.
Portions of the landfill are unlined, while others are lined. The entire waste fill area is capped with either clay or PVC liners.

On October 12, 2023, EGLE requested that select monitoring wells at the site be tested for PFAS compounds. EGLE approved Roscommon County’s PFAS Sampling Work Plan on January 2, 2024.

Sampling results from four monitoring wells were submitted to EGLE on December 11, 2024. All four wells exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for PFOA, with the highest concentration measured at 33 ppt (the MCL for PFOA is 8 ppt).

The landfill is situated on state-owned land and was operated by Roscommon County. Under a remedial action plan approved in August 1994, the County is required to conduct ongoing groundwater monitoring.

The landfill sits at the peak elevation of a glacial moraine, with soils composed primarily of sand and gravel. The depth to groundwater ranges from 50 to 150 feet, and groundwater flows northwest toward Nine Mile Swamp.

Drinking water information

There is no municipal drinking water system in the area. The land directly downgradient of the landfill (in the direction of groundwater flow) is also state-owned. EGLE and the local health department evaluated nearby private wells and found no drinking water wells located downgradient of the landfill.

EGLE has requested that Roscommon County include PFAS sampling as part of its annual groundwater monitoring program.
