Alpena lawyer charged with stealing from Oscoda client

MIO – The Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post announced the arrest of 46-
year-old Michelle Lynne Elowski of Alpena for several felonies including embezzlement and common law fraud.

According to a statement from MSP Lt. Derrick Carroll, the investigation began in February 2023 when the MSP received allegations of an alleged embezzlement by Elowski. Through that inquiry, MSP began an investigation of a series of embezzlement cases where she had allegedly stole money entrusted to her by multiple clients who had retained her to represent them in divorce, probate, and other civil matters.

One of the cases involved an Oscoda County resident. That investigation led to the initial arrest warrant being issued for Elowski.

Elowski was arraigned today (Feb. 2) in the 81st District Court in Oscoda County for one count Check Fraud Non-sufficient Funds $500 or More; Two counts Common Law Fraud; One count Embezzlement by an Agent or Trustee, $1,000 or more but less than $20,000; and One count Embezzlement $50,000 or more but less than $100,000.

Her bond was set at $500,000 10% cash surety. Her next scheduled court appearance is on
Feb. 12.

Carroll said more charges are expected, and the case remains open as more victims are identified.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of fraud or embezzlement by Elowski is asked to contact the MSP Alpena Post 989-354-4101.
