Truck fails to yield to motorcycle; Midland man dies in crash

HOUGHTON LAKE – Roscommon County deputies responded to a personal injury accident on May 27 that claimed the life of a Midland man.

According to a statement from Roscommon County Undersheriff Ben Lowe, deputies arrived at the scene of the accident, located at the intersection of M-55 and Loxley Road in Roscommon Township.

Upon arrival, deputies found that a GMC Sierra pickup collided with a Honda motorcycle. Preliminary investigation found the pickup was driven by Bill Joe Chandanais, 38, of Houghton Lake. Chandanais was driving south on Loxley Road and attempted to cross M-55, when he “failed to yield” to the motorcycle headed west on M-55, causing the motorcycle to hit the side of the truck.

The passenger of the motorcycle, Frederick Hammond, 49, of Midland was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Michael Robert Gray,48, of Midland, was transported by Houghton Lake EMS to West Branch Regional Medical Center, and last airlifted to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for treatment.

Chandanais was transported to Grayling Munson Hospital by Denton Township EMS with non-lie threatening injuries.

Assisting agencies include the Denton Township Police department, Gerrish Township Police Department, Michigan State Police, Roscommon Township Fire Department, Houghton Lake EMS, and Denton Township EMS.
