Michigan State Police Detachment coming to Kaleva

KALEVA- The Michigan State Police (MSP) has been working toward moving our current Manistee County detachment from the Oaks Correctional Facility to a more public-friendly location. Maple Grove Township has made just such a location available.

In 2022, Maple Grove Township opened their Community Center in the previously . Even before the Community Center was open, Township Supervisor Wayne Beldo had offered two adjoining classrooms to the MSP Cadillac Post for use as a new base of operations in Manistee County.

The space was evaluated and the process for creating and approving an official lease agreement was started over the summer of 2022. The lease was approved by the State Administrative Board during their January 2023 meeting, and the lease has been officially approved by the Michigan Department of Management and Budget.

Mr. Beldo turned a set of keys over to Cadillac Post Commander F/Lt. Travis House on Friday, January 27, but much work remains before troopers can move in.

The next steps, which include establishing suitable data connectivity, the installation of additional security measures, and the design/set up of office furniture will take place over the coming months.

For over ten years, troopers from the Cadillac Post have used office space at the Oaks Correctional Facility for report writing, interviewing, and anything else they couldn’t do from their patrol cars. While the troopers have appreciated the Michigan Department of Corrections giving them space following the closing of the Manistee Post in 2011, the prison environment is not always conducive to public interaction.

While “detachments” are not typically open to the public, troopers often use these buildings to meet with persons involved in their investigations. This will be much easier at the new location. As a bonus, Kaleva is more centrally located within the county and is a few miles closer to the Cadillac Post.
