Bad roads cited in fatal accident

ALPENA – On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at approximately 6:18 p.m. troopers from
the Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post were dispatched to the 6000 block of French Road in Alpena Township for a single-vehicle crash.

Troopers arrived to find a 1997 Chevy S-10 had left the roadway and struck two trees. The vehicle was on its side and both the driver and passenger were unresponsive. Emergency crews worked to free the occupants and transport them to MyMichigan Medical Center in Alpena.

The passenger, 54-year-old Andre Benton Edgekoski from Lachine, died at
the hospital. The driver, a 57-year-old man from Alpena, was listed in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was northbound on French Rd. at posted speeds when it lost control due to extremely slippery roads. The vehicle then slid sideways off the east side of the road. The vehicle dipped into a ditch, causing it to overturn onto the driver’s side, striking the trees with the top of the vehicle.

The Michigan State Police urges caution while driving during freezing temperatures as road conditions can change quickly.
