Man stabbed in attempt to free woman

HIGGINS LAKE – On Saturday evening, October 29, 2022, at approximately 6:00 p.m. a woman called Roscommon County Dispatch saying she was driving a man who had been stabbed to the hospital in Grayling.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post responded to the hospital to speak with the victim. The victim, a 38-year-old Roscommon man, was later airlifted to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for surgery.

The incident began at a residence on N. Muskegon Road in Lyon Township. A woman and the suspect, 27-year-old Lawrence Earl Lewis from Roscommon, whom she had a previous relation with, had been staying at the home. They got into an argument and Lewis allegedly assaulted the woman with a taser gun.

The woman attempted to call her mother for help and Lewis took her phone. She was able to retrieve her phone and called her mother.

The woman’s mother arrived along with the victim’s ex- boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend confronted Lewis about assaulting his ex-girlfriend. During the confrontation, Lewis stabbed him and fled the scene in the woman’s car. The woman’s mother drove the stabbing victim to the hospital and called 911.

The vehicle Lewis fled in was abandoned down a two-track road at an oil pump well just inside Crawford County. An MSP Canine Team responded to the scene and tracked Lewis through the woods.

Lewis stopped at a residence on Moorestown Road and asked the homeowner to hide him because the police were looking for him. The homeowner told Lewis to leave and called 911.

Lewis fled and was heard crashing through the woods. Lewis was tracked to a nearby residence and found hiding behind a trash can. He was not complying with verbal commands and the canine was utilized to assist with the arrest.

After Lewis was secure, he was found to be in possession of a folding pocketknife, flashlight, and a key chain taser.

Lewis was taken into custody and transported by EMS to Grayling Munson Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Afterwards troopers lodged him in the Roscommon County Jail.

Lewis was arraigned today in the 82nd District Court in Roscommon County for one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, one count of Domestic Violence Assault (second offense), and one count of Interfering with a Telecommunication Device.

Bond was set at $250,000 cash surety. His next scheduled court appearance is on November 11, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.
Troopers were assisted by deputies from the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office.
