St. Helen man dies in side-by side accident

Canadian man charged in death

ST. HELEN – Shortly after midnight during the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, Roscommon County deputies were dispatched to the scene of a rollover accident at Windywood Dr. and Artesia Beach Rd. in Saint Helen.

Deputies arrived to find Richfield Township paramedics and fire personnel rendering aid to two subjects.  Investigation determined that three subjects had been in the Can-Am side-by-side at the time of the accident.

One passenger, Floyd Edward Meir, a 66 year old male from Saint Helen, Michigan died from injuries sustained in the accident.

A second passenger, a 40 year old male from Stoney Point, Ontario was transported to the hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the vehicle, William Robert Simard, a 44 year old man from Stoney Point, Ontario was arrested for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death.

Simard was later charged by the Roscommon County Prosecutor’s Office with Operating a Vehicle Causing Death, and was subsequently arraigned on that charge in the 82nd District Court.

No additional information is being released at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
