St. Helen woman arraigned on charges of embezzlment from a vulnerable adult

ST. HELEN – The Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post was contacted in February 2022 by a relative of the victim to investigate an alleged embezzlement.

According to Michigan State Police reports, the suspect, 41-year[1]old Kelly Marlynne Haynie-Ulrech from Saint Helen, also a relative of the victim, allegedly embezzled money from the vulnerable adult she had guardianship of. Haynie-Ulrech had been appointed guardian to the victim in June of 2017.

The relative reporting the embezzlement, stated he had concerns about the misuse of the funds in the victim’s bank account. In December of 2021 he petitioned the court to reevaluate the need for a guardian. In February 2022, Roscommon Probate Court held a hearing, and a termination of guardianship was granted.

After the hearing, troopers obtained bank records, credit card statements, monthly bill statements, copies of checks, deposit slips, withdrawals, and tax information. The victim was interviewed, and a report turned over to the Roscommon County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

An arrest warrant was authorized on June 1, 2022. Haynie-Ulrech was notified of the warrant and turned herself in at the Roscommon County Jail on June 2, 2022. She was arraigned today in the 82nd District Court in Roscommon County on one count of Embezzlement from Vulnerable Adult $50,000 to $100,000.

Bond was set at $25,000 10 percent cash / surety. Her next scheduled court appearance is on July 13 at 10 a.m
